My research focuses on defining and limiting the burden of cardiovascular disease and non-vascular cardiac diseases in SLE. Aside from conducting research to delineate the extent to which SLE patients suffer from sequelae of the disease (both related to cardiac and other morbidities), I have actively pursued strategies aimed at preventing cardiac disease in the systemic lupus patients that are served by the Montreal General Hospital Lupus Clinic. This has included focusing more attention on potentially reversible risk factors for cardiac disease, such as hypertension, cholesterol, antiphospholipid antibodies, and homocysteine. To the practice of annual assessments of SLE patients for general health issues, I have advocated for and successfully introduced the yearly systematic evaluation of some of these particular cardiac risk factors.Team Members
