Dr Ward was trained at McGill, Oxford, University of London and Johns Hopkins. He returned to McGill in 1991 where he has remained. He has served in many different roles nationally and internationally in matters related to global health and vaccines. He is a Rhodes scholar (1977) and a member of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (2012). Among other responsibilities, he served as member then chair of the Advisory Board for CIHR's Infection and Immunity Institute from 2008-2021. Since 2010, he has been the medical officer for Medicago Inc based in Quebec City. He has published >280 peer-reviewed manuscripts.
